2024 National Apprenticeship Week

The 5th to the 11th February 2024 was the 17th annual celebration of apprentices in the UK. This week is designed to introduce businesses to the concept and benefits of apprenticeships, to give young people an insight into the different routes into the workplace that are available to them and to meet with other businesses and individuals to share ideas and experiences.

At Next Energy, we are massive advocates for apprenticeships and believe that supporting young people into a meaningful career in renewable energy is a fundamental part of what makes our business great.

The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow, and only by giving them the opportunity to immerse themselves in the work they will be doing will they learn, gain experience, increase in confidence, and be able to propose viable suggestions for improvements.

Next Energy’s apprentices

We are delighted to celebrate our 2023 intake of apprentices during this National Apprenticeship Week.

Our four electrical apprentices are already making a difference and contributing to our workforce, bringing new ideas and a fresh approach to business. Getting out on-site and learning on the job from their experienced colleagues has allowed them to progress quickly through their training, gaining valuable skills and earning while learning.

We also introduced our admin apprentice, Lucy, who has only been with us a short while but has been impressed with her dedication and collaborative approach. She has already come on in leaps and bounds, and we are sure is going to be a superb business administrator or office manager in the future.

Why apprenticeships matter

Every person is an individual. They learn differently, approach challenges differently, and have different motivations for entering the workplace. While some young people thrive in an educational culture, others need to experience the workplace and put their learning into practice to understand the theory that they are learning.

Apprenticeships recognise individual learning styles and reward young people for their commitment by providing them with a route into employment that combines paid on-the-job learning with a recognised qualification. This ensures that the young people entering the workplace are immediately employable, having already demonstrated their practical ability in a work setting.

In a fragile economic climate, encouraging young people to earn while learning instead of accruing educational debt is a valid and viable choice that will stand them in good stead for their future career path.
